How to Change the Default Contact List on Your Blackberry

Spring Cleaning Your Blackberry Contact List!

One gloomy spring day, you decide it’s time for some spring cleaning in one of your email accounts (Hey, it’s not nice outside, and you’d rather do this than the other things on your list). You empty your junk folder, create a new folder or two, delete a few old emails, and clean up your contact list. You figure, whatever, if I need them again, I have them on my Blackberry. Besides, this email isn’t  one that you really use anyway. Your other email address is the one you use the most.  A quick sync on your Blackberry later, and your gr….. wait….  Where did my 300 contacts go?!?!?!

Turns out that the email that you updated happens to be your default contact list. Who knew?

Fortunately, you had recently backed up your Blackberry and were able to recover your lost contacts, but you don’t really want to make the mistake again.

Problem is, if  you have more than one email address synced to your Blackberry, you may not know what the default for your contact list is. Here is how to check and change it:

  • Start by going to Options
  • Then go to Advanced Options
  • Then to Default Services.

  • You should see a screen with a few options, and your email addresses.
  • Go to the Contact List (SYNC) option, and select the email you want to default from the Drop down.
  • Click to save.

But wait! What happens if I don’t have the option to change to a different email? You go to scroll down and your Blackberry doesn’t let you!
No worries! Try this:

  • Go to your Email Set-Up icon
  • Log in if you have to.
  • Highlight the emails you want to turn the syncing off of, and hit edit.
  • Scroll all the way to the bottom, and select Synchronization Options
  • You, should then see some options, like Contacts and Calendar.
  • Uncheck Contacts, and then hit save.
  • Now, select the email that you want to sync
  • Hit Edit, and scroll to Synchronization Options.
  • Now check Contacts, and hit Save.

Now go ahead and sync your phone.

Once you’ve synced, go back into Default Services, and you should be able to  change the email in the Contact List (SYNC) drop-down.  Hit Save, and you’ll be syncing your contacts from the right email from now on!

  2. I can’t change default email to sync contact in my bb torch no matter what I tried. Your tips also didn’t work. Please help.

    • For OS6 devices, like your Torch, go to Device, then to Advanced System Settings, then to Default Services. From there you will have the options to select which email you would like as default for your Contact List, Calendar, etc.

      • I have a torch also and I can’t change my contact sync either.
The email contact is an older one and I have deleted the account from by BB, but to no avail. I don’t have the option to select the email contact list I want to use. If I go to my email options and look under Synchronization options, the only choice I have is “Deleted items”.

        • Try moving all of your Contacts to the My Contacts Folder using the Desktop Manager and syncing them that way.

          • Darrell C says:

Referencing your suggestion above to move contacts using Desktop Manager, could you clarify what you mean specifically?

            THank U

          • Either do a backup of your contacts using the blackberry Desktop software, or save them to your computer using outlook or other program and restore them to your Blackberry.

      • i have done things manually by unchecking the existing e mail a/c & correcting it with my default a/c

also done it by accessing the advance system settings option

but all that is for newer contacts…

not to change the existing ones. !!

  3. I am syncing my Torch 9810 to Outlook 2010. In my Contact List, the only two options are my Yahoo! list (which is empty) and the AT&T list (empty too).

I am able to sync contacts from Outlook, its just that the Outlook contact list is not shown on the Default Services page.

Why doesn’t the software “see” Outlook contacts and list it there, too? I believe this is why my app that adds new phone numbers, etc., is always telling me that the contact I called (who IS in my Outlook contact list) is not in my Contact list since it is looking at the Yahoo! contact list.

    Clear as mud?

    • You can try disabling your Yahoo! contacts list by going to Setup > email Accounts. Highlight your Yahoo! email account then hit the Blackberry button and select Edit. Scroll down to Synchronization Options, and uncheck the Contacts box, then hit save. You may have to confirm for email password.

If that does not help you may have to contact your carriers Tech support. A backup, wipe, and reload of the device may be necessary.

  4. Darrell C says:

Tried what you said and it got rid of both Yahoo! and AT&T contacts lists. Now I have “Default”. Still syncs my Outlook 2010 contacts, though, so I’d best let sleeping dogs lie, eh?

    Thanks

  5. I tried what you said, but didn’t check another email address as a new default…went to Desktop Manager & syncing still didn’t work, so I clicked on “Reset Settings” and reconfigured them all…and, voila! I spent many frustrating hours tonight trying to find a solution to this, and your article was it. Thank you!

  10. Had my contacts sync’d to an old gmail. Deleted it fr phone. Tried to sync to new email, all contacts are “synchronized to oldemail@gmail”. Added old email back to blackberry curve, did not check “sync” to old email. Tried to re select sync to new email. All contacts still say synchronized to old email. I went through advanced, default and it is all set to new email. New email In the email setup is set to sync contacts. WON’T WORK. GRR. SOENT 3 hours on this.

I have tried to sync my contact list with my email but under default services, I still can’t get the option to choose my mail as contact list

    • Under Default services you should see contact list – if you select that you should then be able to select the email account you with to sync the contacts with. – If it is set to default to a different email address then the one you want then you can try
Go to your Email Set-Up icon
Log in if you have to.
Highlight the emails you want to turn the syncing off of, and hit edit.
Scroll all the way to the bottom, and select Synchronization Options
You, should then see some options, like Contacts and Calendar.
Uncheck Contacts, and then hit save.
Now, select the email that you want to sync
Hit Edit, and scroll to Synchronization Options.
Now check Contacts, and hit Save.

If you are still not able to sync the contacts you may need to do a security wipe or contact your providers tech support department.

  12. Having the same problem… cannot get the contact list to default to the Outlook althought it used to be the default – since adding the GMail it will not go back to Outlook and I have tried deleting the gmail account, etc. VERY frustrating since now my phone Torch 9810 and my computer are no longer Sync’d. If anyone has a solution, please let me know!
